Collection: MAARTEN PLATJE - Oil Paintings for Sale
Maarten Platje has established himself as one of the world’s foremost marine painters and is presently at the height of his powers.
At Marine Artists, London, we are proud to represent Maarten. He has used his mastery of painting ships and battles of the great age of sail to depict many American vessels and actions and in recent years he has been painting the huge and glorious panoply of British naval and maritime history, a subject that until now he has scarcely explored.
His English is excellent and most importantly enables him to research British subjects first-hand.
Maarten Platje was born at Rotterdam in The Netherlands in 1967. He studied art at the Ars Aemula Art Academy in Leiden and supplemented this training with several other art courses.
As a young man, Maarten spent some time as a sailor and this proved essential to his understanding of the sea and weather effects before he devoted himself to the painting of ships. He began exhibiting in 1986, building up his reputation as an outstanding marine painter, and his work won a number of awards and was shown in numerous exhibitions and major annual shows in Holland. Some paintings were used as book covers or published in prestigious Dutch magazines.
Maarten Platje’s method when producing a marine painting includes extensive preliminary research embracing written sources, period paintings and drawings, log books and ship models, some from his own collection and others from museum or private collections. Historical accuracy is paramount in the production of his paintings and in this he follows the methods of, among others, Geoff Hunt, who Maarten acknowledges as a pre-eminent master of historical marine painting.
In 1996 Maarten was invited by The Royal Netherlands Navy to embark on a Dutch frigate taking part in NATO operations in the Mediterranean during the war in the former Yugoslavia. This forms a lovely parallel with the great 17th century Dutch marine painter Willem van de Velde, the Elder, who was also an official artist for the Dutch fleet in his time.
This assignment resulted in a number of paintings illustrating naval operations which are now on permanent display at the Naval Museum in Den Helder and at the museum of the Marine Corps of the Royal Netherlands Navy in Rotterdam.
In addition, Maarten Platje’s paintings are on permanent display in a number of galleries in the United States and are in many private collections in Europe and the United States.
