This is one of the most important paintings of a Napoleonic War naval subject ever painted by Maarten Platje.
This very large and extremely detailed work depicts the Battle of San Domingo between French and British warships which took place, barely three months after Trafalgar, in the Caribbean off the coast of the French-occupied Spanish territory of Santo Domingo. It was the last major fleet action of the wars in open water and resulted in a British victory and the destruction of all five French ships-of-the-line.
In this extraordinary painting the artist depicts the finest moments of the great French flagship Imperial, 120 guns, which fought off repeated British attacks with great gallantry. The British flagship HMS Spencer, 74 guns, engaged the much larger Imperial and received rough treatment from the French ship. (Spencer's captain Keats - still smarting from having missed Trafalgar - had hung a portrait of Nelson in his ship's rigging). At this point another 74, HMS Northumberland, interposed herself between Imperial and Spencer to save the latter from more punishment. Some shots from the exceptionally powerful French flagship went through Northumberland and struck Spencer. Eventually overwhelming numbers told and Imperial was at last run aground and fired by her crew.
