Edward Pellew was one of the greatest frigate captains; Britain was extremely fortunate to have him and Lord Cochrane serving in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The personal contrast between the humbly-born Cornishman Pellew and the aristocratic Cochrane could hardly have been greater.
Pellew made his name by winning the first naval action of the war in 1793, when his HMS Nymphe beat the French Cleopatre. He went on to great distinction with the Western Frigate Squadron, based in the west of England, which caused the French the greatest consternation.
In April 1794 the Western Squadron attacked a French squadron near Guernsey and the result was a great British victory. This painting shows the squadron, under the command of Sir John Warren, leaving port before this action.
Looking in a northerly direction we see St. Anthony’s Head. St. Mawes is visible at the right of the painting and Pendennis Castle is on the peninsula to the left.
