This painting by Maarten Platje depicting what is one of the most critical days in the creation of the United States of America.

On the 5th September 1781 British and French fleets fought a battle at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Although the British fleet, under Admiral Graves, were not completely defeated they had the worst of the action and lost control of the sea lanes and therefore the ability to re-supply the British army under Lord Cornwallis that was under siege in Yorktown.

The battle itself lasted barely two hours with not all ships able to become involved. The following day the British fleet was unable to re-engage the French fleet, which was commanded by the Comte de Grasse, leaving the French in control of the waters.

Lord Cornwallis’s surrender was signed at Yorktown on the 19th October 1781.

In Maarten Platje’s painting we see Admiral Drake’s HMS Princessa engaged early in the battle, with the French ship Réfléchi to the right.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
