Geoff Hunt's newest Trafalgar battle scene shows the extraordinary odds faced by HMS Victory and Nelson as they at long last reach the Franco-Spanish line at Trafalgar, after enduring heavy enemy cannon fire which they were completely unable to answer.
The great British flagship is now able to fire the lethal broadside which effectively destroyed the French flagship Bucentaure. To Victory's starboard is a second huge French ship, the Redoubtable.
However what this exceptional painting reveals (as no other picture before it has done) because of Geoff Hunt's unique viewing angle, is that Victory now faced a third opponent, the French ship Neptune straight ahead of her and firing directly at Victory's bow. Neptune inflicted very heavy damage on Victory and "The Lethal Broadside" brings home the danger the flagship still faced.
We are given some idea of the extreme risk and danger attached to Nelson’s revolutionary plan of attack and how close Victory came to total destruction. At this point she has been engaged by three huge opponents. Perhaps only sailors who loved their leader as the British revered their admiral could have carried their ships unflinchingly into such a deadly situation.
