HMS Achilles, a 60-gun ship built at Harwich in 1757, had early success in actions against the French 64 Raisonnable and the 60-gun Comte de St Florentine. In the Spring of 1761 under Capt. Samuel Barrington she was assigned to Admiral Keppel’s squadron for the audacious assault on Belle Isle, just off the south coast of Brittany. After initial setbacks the island was taken and remained in British hands until the end of the Seven Years War. Here we see the Achilles and Prince of Orange assembling troops in “flat boats” before the landing at Port Andro on April 8th.

Achilles is flying what appears to be a Dutch flag but was in fact a pre-agreed signal of identification among the squadron.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
