This exceptional painting by Ian Lowe shows the British battlecruiser HMS Renown breaking off her hot engagement with the two very powerful German ships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.
Renown and her destroyer escorts had engaged the German ships in the early hours of the 9th of April 1940 about 50 miles off the Norwegian Lofoten Islands. The British ships had been supporting British forces during the recent ill-fated Norwegian campaign.
Visibility for both sides was extremely poor due to gales and snow storms. HMS Renown was hit, but also struck Gneisenau and caused her significant damage. Both sides suffered damage from the heavy seas.
The action broke off around 5 a.m. as the escorting destroyers found it difficult to keep up but at 5.20 a.m. Renown emerged from the snowstorm and, increasing speed to 29 knots, resumed the action. Operating such large warships in heavy seas at high speed causes significant damage and, around 6.15 a.m., the Germans disengaged. Renown was unable to sustain sufficiently high speeds to pursue them; she had fired 230 shells during the action.
