Ian Lowe’s painting shows CSS Florida under Lt. C M Morris CSN. She is under sail and steam off the US East coast in 1864 and we see her firing a shot to signal a Union schooner to heave-to.

Florida was built illicitly in England on Merseyside. Always intended for the Confederate navy, she was constructed under the name of Oreto and based on the design of a Royal Navy despatch gunboat.

Launched in 1862, her name was changed in the Bahamas to Florida and she was commissioned into the Confederate States Navy, coming to be based in Mobile, Alabama.

Florida was a highly successful raider with nearly 40 Union ship victims in two cruises before meeting her end at Bahia, Brazil, at the hands of USS Wachusett in late 1864.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
