This is a remarkable painting from the dark year of 1941. Stanley Rogers was serving as a camouflage officer at the Admiralty during the Second World War. He was a distinguished marine artist and very well-known as the author/illustrator of many books on sailing, ships and the sea.
In 1941 Britain was facing her enemies essentially alone and existence was hard and worrying. Despite this, Rogers chose to entitle this painting "This is the Life", reflecting the pleasure of sailing with friends and taking on tough weather and a high sea. The painting is framed in a heavy gilt frame - possibly the original - which reflects the taste of the first part of the 20th century and was exhibited at the Society of Marine Artists.
