HMSWarspite, known as "The Grand Old Lady", earned fifteen Battle Honours in her own right, more than any other major British warship of the 20th century.
In this exceptional painting by Ian Lowe Warspite is seen towards the end of her final deployment, which was to support the Anglo-Canadian landings on the island of Walcheren on 1st November 1944. She is battle-scarred and showing the signs of her long service and the changes made to her after D Day. On this, her final day in action, HMSWarspite opened fire at 08.20 hrs. At 17.30 she loosed the last of the 353 15-inch shells she fired that day and returned to Deal, thus concluding her magnificent Royal Navy career.
We see Warspite here with the monitors HMSRoberts and HMSErebus supporting her in the bombardment.
