HMS Valiant had a long and very distinguished career. A veteran of Jutland, she was extensively refitted before the start of World War II, serving off Norway in 1940 and in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir. Joining the Mediterranean Fleet in May, 1941, she was damaged off Crete and again in Alexandria, this time due to a midget submarine attack.

Following repairs Valiant joined the Eastern Fleet and the Home Fleet before returning to the Mediterranean in summer 1943.

On the 15th September (D+6) Valiant and her sister ship HMS Warspite provided naval gunfire support during the amphibious landings at Salerno, Valiant covering the British sector. The bombardmant continued the folowing day but on the afternoon of the 176th Warspite was hit by a German glider bomb. Despite the danger, Valiant continued to support the troops until nightfall, when she was able to steam away safely in darkness.

Paul Wright has painted HMS Valiant as she would have looked that afternoon, firing her fearsome 15-inch guns at enemy targets around the town of Nocera, between Salerno and Naples.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
