Illustrated: “Commonwealth Cruisers 1939-45”, Osprey Publishing 2015

On 19th July 1941 the light cruiser HMAS Sydney was serving with the British Mediterranean Fleet and patrolling north of Crete in company with five destroyers when she encountered two Italian light cruisers, the Bartolomeo Colleoni and the Bande Nere. Sydney and another destroyer were to the north and altered course to intercept, Sydney opening fire at 8.29 am.

A chase ensued with both sides exchanging fire; a shell from Sydney stopped Bartolomeo Colleoni dead. After being silenced by Sydney she was finished off with torpedoes. Bande Nere was hit twice but managed to escape.

Paul Wright's exceptional painting shows HMAS Sydney in hot pursuit of Bande Nere accompanied by the destroyer HMS Ilex.

The small island of Agria Gramvousa may be seen behind the fleeing Italian cruiser and beyond it lie Cape Spada and Cape Busa.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
