HMS Vanguard was a St Vincent-class dreadnought and therefore only a minor variation from the original Dreadnought herself.

Following Jutland, where she fired eight salvoes as part of the 4th Battle Squadron, Vanguard returned to her wartime anchorage in Scapa Flow. From here she conducted sweeps of the North Sea.

This exceptional painting by Paul Wright shows Vanguard on her last day. On the 9th of July 1917 the ship had been undertaking routine exercises and had anchored at 18.30 in her usual spot – B5 - off the island of Flotta. Then at 23.20, without any warning, Vanguard blew up. All but two of her 806-man crew were killed and the terrible accident was almost certainly the result of an explosion in one of her main magazines.

Here, in conditions of great tranquillity belying the disaster that follows, we see Vanguard anchored alongside the dreadnought HMS Neptune. The view is to the west and the coast of Orphir on the Orkney mainland is seen in the background.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
