The painting shows HMS King George V (Flag, Admiral John Tovey) (Capt. Wilfred Patterson) and HMS Rodney (Capt. George Dalrymple-Hamilton) in the Atlantic, having intercepted the German battleship KMS Bismarck. They are at a range of around 1500 yards and about to open fire.
Admiral Lutjens in Bismarck had hoped to reach France for repairs following the action with Hood and Prince of Wales. Although Bismarck had sunk the Hood, she had been damaged herself and was leaking oil. There followed three days of hide and seek.
Bismarck was unsuccessfully attacked by aircraft from Victorious. Then the shadowing cruisers lost her, Lutjens subsequently destroyed his chance of escape by breaking radio silence, allowing the British to roughly locate his position. The German battleship was then spotted on the morning of May 24th by a Catalina flying boat, actually piloted by a USN officer, Ensign Leonard B ‘Tuck’ Smith.
Bismarck was disabled by aircraft from Ark Royal and the outcome became inevitable. Bismarck was intercepted by Admiral John Tovey with battleships King George V and Rodney. Supported by cruisers Norfolk and Suffolk and destroyers. Bismarck took a terrible pounding; by 09.31 hrs, all her guns were silent. The British continued to fire into the doomed ship until 10.15 hrs. and the cruiser Dorsetshire put two torpedoes into her. Finally at 10.40 hrs Bismarck scuttled herself, capsized and sank.
