This lovely watercolour is a very fine example of the Continental landscapes painted by John MacWhirter during his numerous voyages in search of landscape subjects, perfectly capturing the bright, fresh light and air of the Italian lakes.
John MacWhirter, born in Slateford, Edinburgh, in 1839 was something of a child prodigy. He exhibited his first painting at the Royal Scottish Academy aged only fourteen and was elected an Honorary Member in 1880.
He became a specialist in landscape painting and travelled very widely looking for subject matter, painting in Italy, Sicily, Switzerland, Austria, Turkey, Norway and the USA.
MacWhirter moved to London in 1867 and was elected a Royal Academician in 1893.
The Alps were a particular inspiration to him and he also painted frequently in his native Scotland, inspired by the trees and romantic landscape. Millais and other Pre-Raphaelite artists were an early influence on MacWhirter’s style. John Ruskin encouraged MacWhirter to make small and precise studies of flowers and he had a fine reputation as a painter, being the subject of at least two monographs, “The Life and Art of John MacWhirter” by William Sinclair and “The Art of John MacWhirter”. London, 1904, by M.H. Spielmann.
