This magnificent painting shows the pride of Great Britain’s Royal Navy, the battlecruiser HMS Hood (Flag, Vice Admiral Lancelot Holland) (Capt. Ralph Kerr) lying peacefully at anchor in Scapa Flow naval anchorage in May 1941.

Beyond Hood is the battleship HMS Prince of Wales (Capt. John Leach). We see these mighty ships shortly before they sailed to engage the Bismarck. Passing them is the Admiralty Drifter Daisy II (Skipper John Gatt). The weather may be bright, pleasant and sunny and the great ships look grand and beautiful but the small details of the barrage balloons points up to us that this is wartime and Britain is fighting for her life.

Hood had been the Royal Navy’s proudest symbol for over twenty years. An elegant fast ship, she had been the world’s largest warship for much of her life, until Bismarck herself entered service…

The Admiralty Drifter Daisy II was one of many such vessels acting as tendersto the fleet throughout World War 2. In Oct 1939 she was tenderto HMS Royal Oak when she was torpedoed. Daisy II rescued over 300 survivors, earning her skipper John Gadd a DSC.
