An extraordinary painting of the little-remembered incident in which HMSCamperdown fired four salvoes from her massive 13 1/2 inch gunsat Greek and Cretan insurgents besieging the Turkish-held Izzedin Fort in 1897 in Suda Bay, Crete.
This was the first time that one of the Royal Navy's new "big gun" battleships had fired her guns in action. Four salvoes of 1250 pound shells at the range of four miles settled the matter and the insurgents withdrew. Camperdown was an important and interesting ship; an Admiral class battleship, she was a real prototype pre-Dreadnought emerging from the ironclad era.
Her enormous guns were not carried in a turret but an open barbette, which must have made working them very challenging.
Ian Lowe's notes on the ships depicted and the complicated international incident that is known as the Cretan Intervention are available from us on request, Here Camperdown is seen with the Russian gunboat Groziatstchy to the right and, astern in the distance, the Austro-Hungarion torpedo cruiser Tiger.
HMSCamperdown is now best remembered for the 1893 fatal collision she was involved in after signalling errors by Admiral Tryon.
Ian loves to paint what he calls his "steampunk" pre-Dreadnought battleships with their "tall funnels, ram bows, ventilators and pipes". Here Camperdown has a classic Victorian scheme of black hull, white superstructure and buff funnels and masts, her red waterline outlined with white.
