In his book "The Marine Paintings of Smitheman", published in 2009, Francis described the painting from which this limited edition is taken:

"Discovery was built in 1901 for the Antarctic expedition of the British Royal Geographical Society. She was given a massively reinforced hull for survival in ice and a screw and rudder that could be hoisted into vertical shafts to avoid ice damage. Her interior was fully fitted out with laboratories including a magnetic laboratory. We tend to call her Scott's Discovery because as commander, Robert Scott led an expedition in Discovery from New Zealand in 1901 returning to England in 1904 after spending a summer frozen in the ice. The expedition returned to adulation and respect - men who had prevailed in the icy fastness became heroes! This concept was reinforced by Scott's tragic journey to the South Pole when he and four of his colleagues were frozen to death on the return journey [in 1912] (the vessel than used was the Terra Nova)."
