Looking for a ship in Bombay, Conrad saw one coming in , "a lovely full-rigger with the grace of a perfect yacht". This was the Narcissus, a full-rigged 1300 ton ship built in Scotland. In April 1884 Conrad signed on as second mate. His famous 1897 novel "The Nigger of the Narcissus" has sometimes been taken as a factual account of the voyage back to England but Conrad himself pointed out that he did "not write history, but fiction" and, although it uses a real ship's name, the book is very much a novel.

This lovely painting is one of a group of twelve painted by Mark Myers in 1975 to illustrate a manuscript on Conrad's maritime life by Alan Villiers. Mark served at sea under Alan Villiers and remained devoted to him. The book was finally published in 2006 by Alan's son Peter Villiers. Entitled "Joseph Conrad: Master Mariner" it is an enthralling account of Conrad's extensive maritime service, touching on its influence on his stories and writing. Mark Myers' paintings are beautifully reproduced in the book, bringing out the extraordinary clarity and detail he achieved in each work.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
