The sixteen year old orphan named Josef Korzeniowski, who was to become known world-wide as the great writer Joseph Conrad, signed on to the Mont Blanc in Marseille as a passenger. The year was 1874 and she was the first ship in Conrad's long maritime career. Registered at that time as a barque, Mont Blanc usually carried cargoes of West Indies logs back to France.

Conrad's first voyage, the same year, was from Marseille to Martinique and he signed on for a second voyage, this time as an apprentice, the second trip being once more to Martinique and also Haiti.

This lovely painting is one of a group of twelve painted by Mark Myers in 1975 to illustrate a manuscript on Conrad's maritime life by Alan Villiers. Mark served at sea under Alan Villiers and remained devoted to him. The book was finally published in 2006 by Alan's son Peter Villiers. Entitled "Joseph Conrad: Master Mariner" it is an enthralling account of Conrad's extensive maritime service, touching on its influence on his stories and writing. Mark Myers' paintings are beautifully reproduced in the book, bringing out the extraordinary clarity and detail he achieved in each work.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
