Commissioned Painting
This very fine and large water colour was commissioned from Mark Myers to illustrate a forthcoming book on Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm (1768 - 1838).
The subject shows HMS Donegal under Captain Malcolm sailing into the Straits of Gibraltar a couple of days after Trafalgar and being confronted with the sight of ships devastated both by the battle and the terrible storm that followed it.
This painting had a fascinating genesis as the commissioning client has a very detailed knowledge of the subject and client and artist each contributed many items of research. This viewpoint was chosen from four options and the client was very keen to have a sense of the foul weather into which Donegal was sailing and the battered condition of the ships she discovered.
The following is from the artist's notes: "The scene shows the Donegal, under short canvas, working through the damaged fleets after the battle. I've based the dismasted three-decker on the far left on HMS Temeraire, which the Donegal approached and Admiral Malcolm boarded at the close of October 23rd. The other distant vessels - a frigate towing a dismasted ship-of-the line in the centre and a two-decker sailing under jury rig - are not particular ships but quite representative of those seen by the Donegal through that day."
The 74-gun HMS Donegal, a captured French ship, had accompanied Nelson on the "Atlantic Chase". She missed Trafalgar but captured the Spanish Rayo following the battle.
