The little schooner Pickle, commanded by Lieutenent Lapenotiere, was given the thrilling task of taking the Trafalgar dispatches, the news of Britain's greatest naval victory, back to Britain.
Geoff Hunt has taken a great interest in the career of Lapenotiere, who he sees as "a very deserving officer of whom no-one would ever have heard, together with Pickle, had he not carried the Trafalgar dispatches home".
As it is, Lapenotiere is a famous name in the great Trafalgar story; as conventional reward for bringing the first messages he was promoted Commander and awarded £500 (for which he had to make numerous applications) together with his share of prize money and of the Government's special grant.
Lapenotiere was summoned on board the frigate Euryalus to receive his orders from Collingwood, now in command and using Eurylus as his flagship. Peter Hore, in his book on HMS Pickle, speculates that had Nelson lived he might have rewarded Captain Blackwood by tasking him to take the dispatches home in Euryalus but Collingwood needed the frigate for his flagship and, as he wrote, chose Pickle as he had "no means of speedier or safer conveyance with me at present".
In Geoff Hunt's painting we see the moment, around 12 noon on the 26th of October, when Lapenotiere's little boat returns to Pickle from Euryalus. Pickle will depart immediately for England. It is a masterful depiction of the foul weather and high seas that still afflicted the battered ships of the British fleet.
