The Battle of Dogger Bank took place on January 24th, 1915.
This fine painting shows the German battlecruisers SMS Moltke and SMS Seydlitz (the Flagship) at about 09.45 (British time), engaged at a range of approximately eight miles with Admiral Beatty's battlecruisers. At this time the British were closing the range in what was essentially a stern chase.
We see here Moltke cleared for action with rails and stanchions struck down.
Moltke’s designated target was HMS Tiger (See Ian Lowe’s companion painting to this work, featuring HMS Tiger and HMS Lion in this same action). HMS Tiger received some damage but Lion was badly hit.
SMS Moltke was the second German battlecruiser to be built, being completed in 1911. As well as Dogger Bank, she took part in the raids on Lowestoft, Yarmouth and Hartlepool and was present at Jutland in 1916, where she received extensive damage and lost sixteen of her crew.
More history of SMS Moltke and of the Battle of Dogger Bank is available on request.
