A thrilling and beautiful painting by Geoff Hunt. We see here the British frigate HMS La Nymphe with a sister ship, perhaps Clyde, Indefatigable or Triton and a cutter (either Lurcher or Joseph, as depicted together in a water colour by Geoff Hunt also on our website) pushing in towards Brest to gain intelligence and test and annoy the blockaded French fleet.
We get an immediate sense of the tension of the situation and how keen and eager are the British crews. This is very far from being a routine patrol, despite the long years of repetitive blockade duty that the British have already put in. Look-outs are at the very top of the masts and the ships are very much aware that they will come under fire from the land as they approach Brest and that the French fleet is drawn up in line across the harbour entrance, clearly visible in the clear light of a beautiful June morning.
Any sailing error, piece of bad fortune or a lucky shot from the shore could bring disaster – and this might be the very day on which the French come out, a chance for glory and prize-money…
For this painting Geoff Hunt drew on the experiences of the marine painter Jon Serres who was aboard several of the blockading frigates in 1800.
