A beautiful and highly-detailed painting of a very beautiful ship, this is HMY Alexandra, built for Edward VII and named for his queen Alexandra. She is seen here in 1908, the year of her maiden voyage, and this image perhaps symbolises the high point of the British Empire.

HMY Alexandra was built as a smaller Royal Yacht to fulfil duties that Victoria and Albert was unable to carry out. She was at the important summit in 1908 at Reval (today Tallinn, Estonia) involving Edward VII and Tsar Nicholas II and appears in this fascinating YouTube clip:

Alexandra was used as a hospital ship during the First World War, decommissioned in 1922 and sold to a Norwegian shipping company in 1925. Renamed Prins Olav, she served as a troop ship in the Second World War and was sunk by German bombers in 1940.

We see Alexandra here as a brand-new ship, epitomising the glory of the British Empire, flying the King-Emperor's Royal Standard, the White Ensign and the Union Flag.

This painting came from the collection of Vice-Admiral Sir William Tennant, who was knighted for his exceptional service at Dunkirk, was later captain of HMS Repulse when she was sunk by the Japanese in December, 1941 and played a major role in D-Day. Admiral Tennant served with the future Edward VIII's royal tours in the 1920s in Renown and Repulse and may have known Alexandra from this period.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
