Geoffrey Huband has studied the great career of Edward Pellew over many years, describing him as "a West Country man whose career provides a rich seam of subjects and who had a great influence on the progress of the Navy at that time".

This is a wonderful new painting from a series depicting Pellew, showing the famous action in which Pellew's frigate HMS Nymphe made the first capture of a major enemy ship by a British vessel in the Revolutionary Wars when, in a vicious 50-minute action, he subdued the French Cléopâtre.

The capture was greeted with wild celebrations in Britain, as the country's first major success, and Pellew (already an experienced officer) was knighted for his achievement.
