Commissioned through Marine Artists for a Private Collection in the USA
This lovely water colour was commissioned for an American private collection that already contains several paintings of the ships of this era. The client wishedDreadnoughtto be portrayed at Plymouth, a port that he had visited.
Geoff Hunt painted Dreadnought as she was around 1906/7 - the only time she was in Plymouth - and therefore we see her in her prime at the start of her career, when she was by far the most powerful and advanced battleship in the world.
Dreadnought is shown in the outer harbour, the view looking back towards the land with Drake's Island to the left. She is under way and the light is from the west; the hull is in shadow and the upper works catch the light.
In the foreground a steam pinnace may be seen, of the kind used as Admirals' barges.
