Commissioned Oil Painting on Canvas
Image size: 20 x 30 inches (51 x 76 cm)
Signed
This lovely painting of Turpin with her depot ship Maidstone was commissioned by the family of Lieutenant Commander "Alfie" Roake, who commanded Turpinf rom 1958.
The family presented the painting to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in memory both of Alfie Roake and of the generation of British submariners who carried out many secret missions in the Cold War era.
It was felt that the achievements of this group, using modified T-Class submarines for covert work, has not been recalled and recognised as it might have been - although many of their exploits are still covered by official secrecy and unpublished.
We hope you will visit the Museum to view the painting and explore the Museum's fascinating collection.
Follow this link to the RNSM website for more background to the period and the commissioning of the painting.
