Flag of Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty, Captain A E M Chatfield. On the horizon a ‘Town’ class cruiser.

Here are seen Lion, Princess Royal, Queen Mary and Tiger collectively known as the ‘Big Cats’.Based at Rosyth, they fought at Helligoland, 1914, Dogger Bank, 1915 and Jutland,1916, where Queen Mary was sunk with the loss of most of her crew. Thesquadron had been incorporated as part of the Battle Cruiser Fleet by the time of Jutland.

HMS Lionwas completed in 1912 at Devonport dockyard and further modified the same year. Weighing 26,350 tons and carrying eight 13 1/2 inch guns, she was capable of 27 knots, making her an immensely fast and powerful ship for her daybut she had weak armour and was

nearly lost at Jutland when a shell took out ‘Q’ turret. Lion was coal-fired, whichmeant she made much smoke and needed a crew of over 1000, many being requiredto stoke the boiler furnaces by hand. She was powered by turbines

HMS Lion remained as Flagship to the battlecruisers throughout the war,

By 1920 shewas in reserve at Rosyth, was paid off in 1922 after only 10 years’ service and was scrapped in 1924.
