Early Morning from St Mark’s was painted on one of Peter Curling’s now annual trips to Venice.The painting captures the luminous early morning light as the high tide causes the gondolas moored at the quay at St Mark’s to bob about and knock against each other in a syncopated dance. The classical outline of the Palladio church of San Giorgio Maggiore, which lies on its own island just across the lagoon from the square and opposite the Doge’s Palace, dominates the background in this timeless view of Venice. Painted completely from life, Peter Curling made daily visits to St Mark’s in the early hours before the swarms of tourists descend on the fondementa. Using a simple palette and uncomplicated lines, the artist’s painting perfectly captures the sparkling Venetian light. Peter Curling is fascinated by movement, whether it is in the horse or in the water as it comes up over the quay and spreads across the pavement.
