Canaletto painted this view in 1734 and it is typical of the beautiful views of Venice for which the artist is best known.

Canaletto's entire oeuvre numbers around 800 works, which is far more than would usually be the case for an artist of this time. This was in part because, later in his career and when his name was established, Canaletto used his workshop assistants to complete routine tasks involved in the creation of his paintings, which allowed him the time to add his own unique touch later on.

This subject however was created by the artist when he was at the very height of his powers during his mature Venetian period in the early to mid 1730s. Earlier in his career, he was still learning his craft; later on, many of his paintings were obviously created in conjunction with his assistants. This view falls right in the middle; being created by an artist at his peak but painted in his own hand. As such, the original was sold at Christie's in London as long ago as 1992 for a price of approximately £1,300,000, or $2,500,000.

Most of Canaletto's surviving works in private hands are actually held in the United Kingdom, having been bought up by aristocratic patrons during their Grand Tours. Just as an example, 22 Canalettos were collected by the Dukes of Bedford alone for their ancestral home at Woburn Abbey.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
