For the collector who commissioned this lovely painting, Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' had been his favourite story since boyhood and he jumped at the chance to ask Geoff Hunt to paint a scene from the book, featuring, of course, the Hispaniola.

Geoff initially made pencil sketches of three ideas and this was the subject chosen. A colour sketch in oil was then painted for the client's final approval before the painting was undertaken. Hispaniola is seen being warped into Treasure Island's main anchorage, a nearly land-locked harbour, by the ship's boats. Once there, she is almost surrounded by land.

Geoff Hunt's first problem was to reconstruct the Hispaniola.Itis vital to the story that the ship has three masts but Stevenson was writing in the 1880s, with nineteenth-century schooners in mind, while inthe 1770s, the approximate timein which the book isset, a three-masted schooner was extremely rare. Geoff Hunt in fact found only one example from the period and on this he based the rigging plan for his Hispaniola, while he designed the hull to reflect Stevenson's very exact description of the ship's accommodation.
Similarly, the famous large gun mounted amidships on a swivel would be very unusual for the 1770s.
The figures are particularly beautifully painted; those on deck look quite large, giving a sense that Hispaniola was not a huge vessel.
The golden-haired Jim Hawkins may be seen at the prow of the white boat.
