This beautiful painting was commissioned by a client who has a career-long connection with the Cayman Islands. He asked Geoff to immortalise the wonderful Cayman Islands schooners and Geoff was keen to paint and research a subject outside his usual territory.
As it transpired, source material of plans, maps and old photographs was surprisingly thin on the ground and difficult to find, being chiefly in local archives, and here the client himself played a most helpful role in finding and supplying such material, including his own photgraphs of Goldfield. This added to his satisfaction and personal involvement in the project and was most gratefully acknowledged by the artist.
The finished painting ispartlyan elegy for these beautiful schooners, an evocation of an idyllic place and time - the Caymans in the 1930s - and also a rigorously researched depiction both of the ships and the harbour setting of the time, showing the Mansion House and the then Government House.
