The most celebrated of the American great clippers, the Flying Cloud was the largest merchantman yet built and was claimed to be 'destined to make a new era in shipbuilding all over the world'. Of her Longfellow wrote:

'She starts, - she moves, - she seems to feel /the thrill of life along her keel,/ and, spurning with her foot the ground, /with one exulting joyous bound, she leaps into the ocean's arms.'

This Limited Edition illustrates a well-documented 'brush' with another famous clipper, the N.B. Palmer. Both ships were bound from New York to San Francisco. The Cloud left eight days ahead of its rival and yet Captain Low in the Palmer managed to catch up with the ship at 32° South. Captain Cressy challenged by the Palmer's performance crammed on all sail to the studding sails (extra square sails run out on extensions to the yards) and left the Palmer behind for good. In fact in her day the Flying Cloud was the fastest clipper afloat, able to average 15 I/2 knots over a 374 nautical mile run, at times exceeding 18 knots.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
