S. Francis Smitheman depicts the aftermath of the terrible storm that broke after Trafalgar. Two great symbols of Britain can be seen, the Rock of Gibraltar and Nelson's dreadfully battered Victory bearing the body of one of the country's greatest heroes, all set against menacing storm clouds. The clouds seem to evoke how close the nation had come to disastrous defeat in the years of war and the battle just past; the clearing sky to symbolise the sweet calm of victory and safety.

After the storm following Trafalgar, Victory was taken in tow by the 64-gun Polyphemus but became uncontrollable. Victory was then set adrift until Neptune,98 guns, picked up the tow on the 27th October. Commanded by Nelson's old friend Fremantle, Neptune brought Victory, with Nelson's body aboard, safely to Gibraltar the next day.

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER 

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above. 

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
