In January 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition started out with the intention of crossing Antarctica - 'the last great journey on earth'. In December his ship Endurance entered the pack ice and edged southwards. By January 1915, she was trapped in the ice and her position became steadily worse until the 27th October when she was abandoned and sank. Shackleton and his men were forced to make a 600 mile treck across ice and ocean to solid land and then a 700 journey in an open boat to South Georgia, followed by an epic crossing of the uncharted mountains of that Island.

Though the expedition failed in its objectives, the heroic achievements resulting from its various disasters have deservedly been writ large in the history of Antarctica.

In this Limited Edition Shackleton is seen inspecting the dogs, to whom he was very attached. When, owing to the shortage of food, he had to order them to be shot he stated "it was the worst job we had throughout the expedition and we felt their loss keenly".

Framing

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON PAPER

We use a simple classic frame, gold finish over a black ground, approximately 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm) in width with off-white acid-free mount 2 1/2 to 3 inches (6.5 - 7.5 cm) wide. Pictures are framed under glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging.

For larger pictures that are to be shipped we can use perspex instead of glass for security in transit - we may contact you to discuss this. Frame example shown above.

PRINTS & PAINTINGS ON CANVAS

For pictures on canvas we use a simple classic frame with a gold finish and a white slip next to the canvas, approximately 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) in width. Pictures are framed like an oil painting with no glass and fitted with wire ready for hanging. Frame example shown above.
