The British ships had been supporting British forces during the recent ill-fated Norwegian campaign.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVisibility for both sides was extremely poor due to gales and snow storms. HMS \u003ci\u003eRenown\u003c\/i\u003e was hit, but also struck \u003ci\u003eGneisenau\u003c\/i\u003e and caused her significant damage. Both sides suffered damage from the heavy seas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe action broke off around 5 a.m. as the escorting destroyers found it difficult to keep up but at 5.20 a.m. \u003ci\u003eRenown\u003c\/i\u003e emerged from the snowstorm and, increasing speed to 29 knots, resumed the action.
