The personal contrast between the humbly-born Cornishman Pellew and the aristocratic Cochrane could hardly have been greater.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePellew made his name by winning the first naval action of the war in 1793, when his HMS \u003cem\u003eNymphe\u003c\/em\u003e beat the French \u003cem\u003eCleopatre\u003c\/em\u003e. He went on to great distinction with the Western Frigate Squadron, based in the west of England, which caused the French the greatest consternation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn April 1794 the Western Squadron attacked a French squadron near Guernsey and the result was a great British victory. This painting shows the squadron, under the command of Sir John Warren, leaving port before this action.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking in a northerly direction we see St. Anthony’s Head.
