The British flagship HMS \u003cem\u003eSpencer\u003c\/em\u003e, 74 guns, engaged the much larger \u003cem\u003eImperial \u003c\/em\u003eand received rough treatment from the French ship. (\u003cem\u003eSpencer\u003c\/em\u003e's captain Keats - still smarting from having missed Trafalgar - had hung a portrait of Nelson in his ship's rigging). At this point another 74, HMS \u003cem\u003eNorthumberland\u003c\/em\u003e, interposed herself between \u003cem\u003eImperial\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eSpencer\u003c\/em\u003e to save the latter from more punishment. Some shots from the exceptionally powerful French flagship went through \u003cem\u003eNorthumberland\u003c\/em\u003e and struck \u003cem\u003eSpencer\u003c\/em\u003e.
