While serving under Admirals Hood, Hotham and Jervis in the Mediterranean he had often been given overall command of a squadron of ships where, as senior captain, he was referred to by the courtesy title of commodore (not at this time a substantive rank), but he did not hoist his broad pendant as a first-class Commodore until 8th April 1796. Three days after this proud moment he led a squadron westward from Genoa along the Ligurian coast in support of the Austrian army, then pursuing a French army towards Savona. The ships were 'sailing along shore', an exceptionally unusual phrase to see in a logbook; they were in fact so close in to the steep-to coast that they could actually see the armies and see and hear the firing.
