HMS Guerriere’, recognising the US ship, hove to and fired the first broadside - which fell short.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe two ships started to exchange broad sides at very close range and it was not long before \u003ci style=\"color: rgb(38, 38, 38); letter-spacing: 0.15pt;\"\u003eConstitution\u003c\/i\u003e’s heavier guns proved fatal. Shortly after both \u003ci style=\"color: rgb(38, 38, 38); letter-spacing: 0.15pt;\"\u003eGuerriere\u003c\/i\u003e’s remaining masts fell. Lacking any manoeuvrability she was unable to avoid \u003ci style=\"color: rgb(38, 38, 38); letter-spacing: 0.15pt;\"\u003eConstitution\u003c\/i\u003e’s continuing broadsides which quickly reduced the British ship to a wreck. Firing a cannon away from \u003ci style=\"color: rgb(38, 38, 38); letter-spacing: 0.15pt;\"\u003eConstitution\u003c\/i\u003e, she then struck her colours.
