She was given a massively reinforced hull for survival in ice and a screw and rudder that could be hoisted into vertical shafts to avoid ice damage. Her interior was fully fitted out with laboratories including a magnetic laboratory. We tend to call her Scott's \u003cem\u003eDiscovery\u003c\/em\u003e because as commander, Robert Scott led an expedition in \u003cem\u003eDiscovery\u003c\/em\u003e from New Zealand in 1901 returning to England in 1904 after spending a summer frozen in the ice. The expedition returned to adulation and respect - men who had prevailed in the icy fastness became heroes! This concept was reinforced by Scott's tragic journey to the South Pole when he and four of his colleagues were frozen to death on the return journey [in 1912] (the vessel than used was the \u003cem\u003eTerra Nova\u003c\/em\u003e).\"\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"S.
