However in the early part of her career she had been a deepwater barque, undertaking cargo voyages to and from Chile, the Pacific coast of Mexico, Brazil and Australia and so she had a rich and romantic history before being converted to a barquentine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDelivering, loading and unloading the coal cargoes was hard work for the crew but Conrad made many such voyages in \u003cem\u003eSkimmer of the Sea\u003c\/em\u003e and looked back in later life on his time in her with affection. Working on a British ship at this time must have greatly improved the Polish boy's grasp of the English language.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lovely painting is one of a group of twelve painted by Mark Myers in 1975 to illustrate a manuscript on Conrad's maritime life by Alan Villiers. Mark served at sea under Alan Villiers and remained devoted to him. The book was finally published in 2006 by Alan's son Peter Villiers. Entitled \"Joseph Conrad: Master Mariner\" it is an enthralling account of Conrad's extensive maritime service, touching on its influence on his stories and writing.
