This viewpoint was chosen from four options and the client was very keen to have a sense of the foul weather into which Donegal was sailing and the battered condition of the ships she discovered.

The following is from the artist's notes: "The scene shows the Donegal, under short canvas, working through the damaged fleets after the battle. I've based the dismasted three-decker on the far left on HMS Temeraire, which the Donegal approached and Admiral Malcolm boarded at the close of October 23rd. The other distant vessels - a frigate towing a dismasted ship-of-the line in the centre and a two-decker sailing under jury rig - are not particular ships but quite representative of those seen by the Donegal through that day."

The 74-gun HMS Donegal, a captured French ship, had accompanied Nelson on the "Atlantic Chase".
