The classical outline of the Palladio church of San Giorgio Maggiore, which lies on its own island just across the lagoon from the square and opposite the Doge’s Palace, dominates the background in this timeless view of Venice. Painted completely from life, Peter Curling made daily visits to St Mark’s in the early hours before the swarms of tourists descend on the fondementa. Using a simple palette and uncomplicated lines, the artist’s painting perfectly captures the sparkling Venetian light.
