This scene is set at about midday, when the flagship's squadron appeared in the harbour mouth and the first of many gun salutes is being fired from the forts and ships lying in the harbour.

The flagship, the 84-gun Principe Real, is to the right of centre, flying the royal standard at the main masthead. To the left of this ship is fort São Joao, at the harbour mouth, firing a salute; and left again one of the other warships, either the Alfonso d'Albuquerque or the Medusa, both of 64 guns. At the extreme left is the famous 'Sugarloaf' (Pão de Açucar) mountain.

To the right of the flagship the distant view up the harbour shows the main anchorage off the Ilha das Cobras (what is now Santos-Dumont airport), with the remaining ten or so Portuguese warships and their escort of three British warships, all of which had arrived over the preceding weeks. Many small boats are out on the water to welcome the royal visitors, including, at the right a Patuche, the delightful dual-rigged Portuguese design.

COMMISSIONING GEOFF HUNT

At Marine Artists one of our main specialities is commissioning great marine and historical paintings for clients and collectors all over the world

To commission your own painting from Geoff Hunt, contact Charles Mayes cm@marineartists.co.uk and we will post or email you a free pack of information including our short guides "Commissioning a Painting from Geoff Hunt" and "Price Guide and Timescale"

The commission process is very easy, straightforward and enjoyable

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1048/3050/1206/files/Hunt_20-_20Port_20Royal_20Family_20final_20-_20large_20stamped_281_29_b40764c1-1f18-4c6b-bdde-b9fc972226e3.jpg?v=1791279824
