Tower Bridge looked down on some forty five miles of quays, mostly in the great purpose-built enclosed dock systems which handled millions of tons of cargo. But there were many small wharves like the one shown here, which were also part of the Port of London and where small vessels could discharge their cargo, take on stores or be repaired. Most of this small scale building has now disappeared and with it much that was dingy and decrepit, but along with it has gone a fascinating history.

The Limited Edition shows the barque Ellen being towed up towards Tower Bridge. Though built at Grimstad, Norway in 1893, when sailing ships tended to be large and built of iron or steel, the 500 ton Ellen has the traditional appearance of a vessel built much earlier.

S.
