Francis Smitheman depicts the aftermath of the terrible storm that broke after Trafalgar. The clouds seem to evoke how close the nation had come to disastrous defeat in the years of war and the battle just past; the clearing sky to symbolise the sweet calm of victory and safety.

After the storm following Trafalgar, Victory was taken in tow by the 64-gun Polyphemus but became uncontrollable. Victory was then set adrift until Neptune,98 guns, picked up the tow on the 27th October.
