The picture itself is one of his most atmospheric images:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Commodore Hayes, commanding His Britannic Majesty's frigates \u003cem\u003eEndymion\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003ePomone\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eTenedos\u003c\/em\u003e, carrying his flag in the \u003cem\u003eMajestic\u003c\/em\u003e, was on blockade duty off New York in early January 1815. Blown off station by a violent snow-storm on the 14th, he guessed that Commodore Decatur would seize this opportunity to get his USS \u003cem\u003ePresident\u003c\/em\u003e out to sea, and further correctly guessed Decatur's likely course. Consequently, at daylight on the 15th, \u003cem\u003ePresident\u003c\/em\u003e appeared \"as if by rendezvous\". some five miles ahead of the British squadron. The chase was on. The day began with strong winds but these eased progressively until by the afternoon there was so little wind that all ships were carrying every stitch of canvas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFollowing crushing defeats in single-ship frigate actions earlier in the war, the Royal Navy had realised that its standard frigate classes were no match for American heavy frigates such as President, which was some fifty percent larger, stronger and more heavily armed. But by 1815 the British had formulated responses to this threat, and Hayes' squadron was a perfect example. His flagship \u003cem\u003eMajestic\u003c\/em\u003e was a \"razee\", a cut-down 74-gun battleship, and more than a match for the \u003cem\u003ePresident \u003c\/em\u003eif it could only catch it. \u003cem\u003eEndymion \u003c\/em\u003ewas the nearest equivalent the British had to \u003cem\u003ePresident\u003c\/em\u003e, a heavy frigate not far short of the American's size and weight of fire. The squadron had two other frigates as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost importantly on this day, \u003cem\u003eEndymion\u003c\/em\u003e had the speed to catch the American...\u003cem\u003eEndymion\u003c\/em\u003e surged on ahead and after a chase of seven hours gradually began to overhaul \u003cem\u003ePresident\u003c\/em\u003e despite every resource Decatur employed to escape. The two ships were firing steadily at each other from 2 pm onwards. The winter sunset was at 4.45 pm; still they fought on at close range. Around 8 pm aboard \u003cem\u003eEndymion\u003c\/em\u003e it seemed that \u003cem\u003ePresident\u003c\/em\u003e had ceased fire and they even believed that Decatur had surrendered; but the American dismantling shot had wrecked \u003cem\u003eEndymion\u003c\/em\u003e's sails and she had no boats left to take the surrender, so she stood off to bend six new sails...before resuming the chase. After \u003ci\u003eConstitution\u003c\/i\u003e had hoisted her colours, the two British ships hoisted the British ensign and battle commenced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the evening light quickly faded so did the intense fire of the British ships. Both ships being line astern and to leeward of the American, they became enveloped in smoke and unable to see their enemy.\u003ci\u003e Constitution\u003c\/i\u003e backed her sails and made sternway until she was opposite the rearmost and now isolated British ship. When the smoke cleared the battle recommenced but it was not long before the smaller HMS \u003ci\u003eCyane\u003c\/i\u003e struck her colours. \u003ci\u003eConstitution\u003c\/i\u003e then made for HMS \u003ci\u003eLevant\u003c\/i\u003e which had headed away for repairs.
