While serving under Admirals Hood, Hotham and Jervis in the Mediterranean he had often been given overall command of a squadron of ships where, as senior captain, he was referred to by the courtesy title of commodore (not at this time a substantive rank), but he did not hoist his broad pendant as a first-class Commodore until 8th April 1796. Three days after this proud moment he led a squadron westward from Genoa along the Ligurian coast in support of the Austrian army, then pursuing a French army towards Savona. The ships were 'sailing along shore', an exceptionally unusual phrase to see in a logbook; they were in fact so close in to the steep-to coast that they could actually see the armies and see and hear the firing. Even with subjects so dictated by historical record we see how the artist finds differing viewpoints.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNelson hoisted his flag aboard HMS \u003ci style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'Book Antiqua', 'serif'; font-size: 11pt;\"\u003eVictory \u003c\/i\u003eon 14th September 1805, and at 4 am the following morning \u003ci style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'Book Antiqua', 'serif'; font-size: 11pt;\"\u003eVictory \u003c\/i\u003eand her accompanying frigate, HMS \u003ci style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: 'Book Antiqua', 'serif'; font-size: 11pt;\"\u003eEuryalus\u003c\/i\u003e, weighed anchor from St Helen's anchorage off the Isle of Wight and proceeded to sea, though in the very light winds they did not get very far before anchoring again, presumably in order to wait out a tide. Here she is seen putting to sea on 2nd May 1794 in company with the 98-gun flagship, HMS \u003ci style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', serif;\"\u003eBoyne\u003c\/i\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me about this subject was the \u003ci style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', serif;\"\u003eBerbice’s \u003c\/i\u003ecommander, Lieutenant Lapenotiere. Clearly a thoroughly competent seaman and navigator, he had a career full of interest - going to the Pacific on Captain Bligh’s second voyage, serving in the West Indies, in the Mediterranean, and on the Brest blockade. He stayed in the rank of Lieutenant for many years and was always in command of small ships, schooners and cutters and the like, all about 120 tons, all of them with a few cannon and about 35 men on board. \u003ci style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', serif;\"\u003eBerbice \u003c\/i\u003ewas his very first command. No-one would ever have heard of him had he not been in command of yet another small schooner, the \u003ci style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua', serif;\"\u003ePickle\u003c\/i\u003e, which was entrusted with the dispatches bringing home the news of the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelson’s death. It shows the day on which one of the great Nelson legends was born, that of his refusal to see his commander’s signal to disengage. Here are Geoff Hunt’s own detailed notes on the painting and on Nelson’s least-known battle – and it is a fascinating story:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“This battle contained the famous episode in which Nelson held the telescope to his blind eye, thus refusing to see Admiral Hyde Parker's signal to withdraw. But this scene is from near the beginning of the engagement, just as Nelson's flagship, HMS \u003ci\u003eElephant\u003c\/i\u003e, centre foreground, is taking her place in the line ahead of other ships in his squadron. From the foremast is flying his command flag as Vice-Admiral of the Blue squadron, and from the mizzen his favourite signal, number 16, 'Engage the enemy more closely'. Each ship was ordered to proceed up the line to its assigned place with the leading ships dropping off first, and Nelson made use of a technique ('anchoring by the stern') for stopping rapidly in a desired location, just as he did at the Nile and was to order again at Trinidad in 1805, which entailed dropping an anchor attached to a cable led out through the stern rather than the bow. A colour sketch in oil was then painted for the client's final approval before the painting was undertaken. \u003ci\u003eHispaniola\u003c\/i\u003e is seen being warped into Treasure Island's main anchorage, a nearly land-locked harbour, by the ship's boats. Once there, she is almost surrounded by land.\u003c\/p\u003e\nGeoff Hunt's first problem was to reconstruct the \u003ci\u003eHispaniola.\u003c\/i\u003eItis vital to the story that the ship has three masts but Stevenson was writing in the 1880s, with nineteenth-century schooners in mind, while inthe 1770s, the approximate timein which the book isset, a three-masted schooner was extremely rare.
